What Your Kids Can Do These School Holidays

What Your Kids Can Do These School Holidays

The school holidays aren’t far away, which means now is the perfect time to start thinking about how to entertain your kids over the break (we know, it’s not an easy feat). Although it can be tempting to let the kids have as much screen time as they want so that you can get a break, the holidays can also be a time for you and your kids to try new things together and get active. Here are some ideas for school holiday activities that will keep your kids (and you!) entertained:

Take Them to a Basketball Camp!

Okay, we know we’re a little biased with this one. But our holiday basketball camp is the perfect fun and structured activity to keep kids active and engaged. Our Little Boomers Basketball Camp is suitable for children aged and is perfect for everyone from total beginners through to intermediate players. Our basketball camp covers all sorts of skills, including dribbling, shooting, passing and more (we split the children into age groups to ensure that the activities suit their ability level). Our camps are run efficiently so that you can rest assured you will get the best value for money – but don’t worry, our camps are also heaps of fun for all the kids (and the coaches) involved. If you want to keep your children active these holidays, leave it to the experts!

Go Out & Explore Nature

The great outdoors offer so many different choices for activities that will have children entertained for hours. If you want to stay close to home, you could go to your favourite park and have a picnic (don’t forget to bring the frisbee or cricket set!). If you’re willing to drive a little further, why not go for a bush walk, go fruit picking, go bird watching, visit a hobby farm, head to the beach, or visit a place you’ve never been before and get exploring? One great way to keep your kids engaged during outdoor activities is to get them to do a treasure hunt along the way. Just tell your child what they have to look out for – this could be leaves, shells, rocks, flowers and anything else they will find along the way – and give them a little bag to store their collection in. Then, when you get home, they can use the objects they found to make a collage or create a painting.

If you want to get your kids outdoors but don’t want to leave home, you can make the most of your backyard. Why not introduce your child to gardening, and create a vegetable garden together? Or, if you want to get them moving, why not set up an obstacle course in the backyard? You can use furniture that you already have for this (they can duck under chairs and climb over tables) or you can buy some items like cones, hoops or rope ladders. Whatever you choose to do, being outside as much as possible is a perfect way to spend the school holidays!

Have Fun Indoors at Home

Once you’ve had your fun outdoors, there’s plenty you can do at home. Do you have a cupboard that is full of board games you rarely play? This is the perfect time to play them! Board games are great because they encourage focus and concentration, and get the whole family involved. If you want to add an extra challenge and take ‘boardgaming’ to a new level, why not help the kids to create their own?! You can come up with an original game together, or they can create an existing game like snakes and ladders. If you need some inspiration, the internet has all sorts of DIY board game suggestions.

Staying in also offers endless opportunities for arts and crafts. You could make a family tree, do colouring in, make jewellery, have a paper plane flying competition, make dream catchers, learn new skills together (like knitting, tie dying or origami) or use the objects you found on your walks to make found-item artworks!

So Many Options, So Little Time!

The activities listed above are just some of the thousands of potential school holiday activities you could do together. Just writing this, we’re actually a bit jealous about all the fun you’ll have together. If you’re keen to get your kid/s involved in a new activity where they will get plenty of exercise, learn new skills and make friends, don’t forget to book in for our kids basketball camp!
